Journalism's first obligation is to the truth. This is the first principle delineated in the book, Elements of Journalism.

It's first book I read on the topic. I had two reasons why I read it: (1) it is necessary to my work, and (2) I'm trying to look for some standards to which the practice of free press should adhere too. After going through the ten elements of journalism that stood the test of history, I thought, "Man, Philippine Press is so darn free."

Lest you missed it, I was being sarcastic. With the state of media in our country, I am sure not many of them - at least the ones we read and watch daily - read this book. As a start up in news writing, I'm just glad this is the first book I encountered.

Nowadays, Journalism's first obligation is to the sponsors. Am I right, or, am I right?
